Serial Pest in the Valley
It seems the Mary Valley has been plagued by a serial pest this week. A man claiming to be from the DPI has been visiting people’s homes unannounced and uninvited and offering unwelcome comments and suggestions about selling their properties to QWIPL.
Some people have been distressed by the man’s behaviour, and had to ask him to leave. He has also been asked to leave the Kandanga Info Centre on at least two occasions for being a nuisance and disturbing the peace.
Complaints have been made through official channels. With luck this person will not be back next week. However, just in case he makes an uninvited visit to your home in the future, remember that you have rights, and a community around you willing to provide support:
Feel free to pass on the above information to other friends and neighbours, especially if they are within QWIPL’s land-grab target zone.

Complaints have been made through official channels. With luck this person will not be back next week. However, just in case he makes an uninvited visit to your home in the future, remember that you have rights, and a community around you willing to provide support:
- You do not have to talk to this man if you don’t want to. If you ask him to leave and he refuses then he is trespassing.
- You have a right to ask him for I.D. to prove who he is.
- Do not allow yourself to be intimidated. If you are alone, you can tell him to go away and phone you later if he wants to arrange an appointment for a meeting. You may feel more comfortable if you have a family member, friend or neighbour present. If you wish, you can phone the Save the Mary River group on 5488 4800 and I am sure someone will be happy to come and be your moral support and witness.
- If you feel disturbed, distressed or harassed at any time by this man’s behaviour, you have a legal avenue for complaint through the Qld Public Service Code of Conduct. You do not have to accept bullying, harassment or any other unwelcome or nuisance behaviour.
- If you are approached by this person, it is advisable to make some written notes (name, date, time, what was said, etc) as soon as possible. This holds for whenever you speak with anyone from the Qld Government or QWIPL (either over the phone or face to face). As well as being useful for your own records, such notes are invaluable in any formal complaint or subsequent legal action.
- If this man or anyone else from the Qld Government or QWIPL harasses you or visits your home uninvited, I encourage you to let the Save the Mary River group know about it (5488 4800) – especially if you would like assistance with making a formal complaint. This goes for anyone who has already been approached this week.
