Traveston Crossing Dam EIS – Stage 1
On 29 November 2006 the Federal Minister for the Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH) decided that the Project constitutes a ‘controlled action’ under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cth) (EPBC Act) due to the likely potential impacts on matters of national environmental significance. The controlling provisions under the EPBC Act are:
Landowners meeting with QWIPL
Today, several landowners in Middle Creek Road, Federal, met with Mr Rod Herd, Project Manager for Queensland Water Infrastructure Pty Ltd. This meeting was called as a result of the Green Folder information that was sent to landholders. Several of us in Middle Creek Road compared the Maps that were fowarded in our green folders. It became evident - even to us mere country folk, that neighboring properties had different lines (red) with each property being either fully resumed or partially resumed. Of note, our property which has two paddocks which are as high or higher than our neighbors, will be totally resumed - according to the maps. Our fellow neighbour, whose house is situated at approximately the same height or lower than our front paddocks, is able to keep her house and a portion of the land, only the creek area will be resumed.

As part of AFTCRA’s preliminary studies, Craig has completed countless hours of passive observation of the aquatic wildlife and these studies usually involve two people. Craig snorkels large stretches of the river and relays what he has seen to a second volunteer in a canoe. GPS co-ordinates are taken for all Mary River turtle habitat and nesting sites, cod sightings and Platypus sightings. Craig estimates that he has seen one Queensland lungfish for every 75 metres of the river that he has snorkelled. So far, AFTCRA Inc. have surveyed from Moy Pocket to 5kms upstream of the proposed dam wall site. “It is absolutely incredible, what you can see below the surface!” Craig said. “I wish we could get some of our politicians to see for themselves what they are willing to destroy!”
Not the Secretary's Report
Hello again, and I hope you are all feeling great. We have a wonderful new team in charge of the hall and my thanks go to them for wanting to help us all. Quite a few people have left our district recently and while I wish them well I am waiting for the day when I can say “You missed out on living in the best place” Might take a while but eventually our hearts will be lighter and we can kick up our heels again.
March 14th is International River Day.
“Take a stand on March 14th for healthy rivers and thriving communities!
Changes to the EPBC Act
On the 12th of October a Bill was tabled in Parliament that meant important changes to the EPBC Act.
Less dam area needed for buffers - Anna Bligh
After extensive studies, Queensland Water Infrastructure — the company delivering the dam — has identitled the total land required for the project, including a buffer area around the dam, to be in the order of 9800ha. It is this reduction in the size of the total land area, including the buffer, that has allowed the Government to significantly reduce the number of properties required from an anticipated 1000 to 597, including Stage 2.
