Queensland Water Infrastructure
Thank you for taking the time to allow me to introduce Queensland Water Infrastructure Pty Ltd. In April 2006 the State Government announced it would build a dam at Traveston Crossing, as part of a package of measures to ensure a safe and sustainable water supply for south east Queensland’s growing population.
Dambusters Newsletter No 6
There have been several local disaster stories where residents have entered into unconditional contracts to purchase a new property before having a watertight contract from the Queensland Government. These have resulted from people not having a commitment from the government for both the sale of their property and the date of the availability of funds from the sale and as a consequence they have ended up in serious financial difficulties. What the committee is doing
The Save the Mary River Coordinating Group is unswerving in its opposition to the proposed Mary River dam, and stopping the dam is and will always be the number one aim of the group.
These are the people behind the Traveston dam statistics.
Their stories of uncertainty, financial hardship and heritage lost provide an insight into the impact Mary Valley residents since the plan was announced in April. This week the Government unveiled a revised proposal to stagger construction, with the first stage requiring the resumption of 500 properties instead of the 872 originally planned. The total cost of the down-sized dam will be $1.7 billion and is due for completion in 2011. A future Government has been left to decide some time after 2025 whether the second stage is necessary and those sitting within its boundaries have been offered the opportunity to sell now and lease their property back at 25% of market rate.

It is not a reflection of how many people are being affected by this proposal, and remember it is still only a proposal, for it estimated that 10,000 people are being affected by loss of community, livelihood and amenities. In two, or three or even four years time when it is squashed how many lives and communities will have been destroyed when right here and now the experts are saying THIS DAM WON’T WORK.
Support mounts in anti-dam campaign
The Save the Mary River Coordinating Group says more professionals are weighing into the fight against the proposed Traveston Crossing dam. Spokesman Rick Elliot says an increasing number of people with a science and research background have approached the group.
