Suboptimisation: the tendency of engineers and designers to spend their time finding the very best way of doing something that shouldn’t be done at all, because they fail to consider the larger context, often with disasterous consequences.

On June 11, 2007, the government of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh closed the gates of the Omkareshwar dam in the Narmada valley. Since then, dozens of villages have been flooded, and houses, fields and trees have disappeared under the water. Most families from the submerged villages have not been given new land — they have nowhere to go.

This pic shows the proposed approximate positioning of the dam wall (purple) and the water height when full (if ever we get the 10 year flood) with the blue grid. The tree at the top left (old fig tree) is where the proposed spillway will be in front of! (click image to enlarge)

The above photo was taken on Friday 13.4.07 at the precise spot that the proposed Mega-dam wall will disect the Mary River. On this day, Craig Latta and Bernie McAlister of AFTCRA Inc.(Australian Freshwater Turtle Conservation & Research Association) revisited the site and caught a sample population of turtles within a 30 minute period. We caught 8 Mary River turtles, 5 Krefft’s turtles and an adult pair of Saw-shelled turtles within that time frame! It is important to note that the sandy bank on the RHS in the background of the photo is one of 13 known Mary River turtle nesting sites that will be flooded! Seven definite Mary River turtle nesting banks have been identified between Moy Pocket and the Vic Olsen Bridge at Tuchekoi that will also be flooded!:- more

Twelve months on - Arkin Mackay

Twelve months ago the intrepid Stop Press team embarked on a 4 day, 1800 km trip to see at first hand the plight of many of southeast Queensland’s dams. This journey was inspired by the State Government’s announcement in April ‘06 that a dam would be built on the Mary River, near Traveston (just south of Gympie). What we found on this trip was visually disturbing enough… and not a future we wanted to see bestowed upon the fertile Mary Valley. However, twelve months ago there was still strong optimism that good summer rains would set things right.
