What are YOU doing to stop the Traveston Crossing Dam?

Here is a way to be an active citizen in the run-up to the looming 2009 state election -
1: Ask ALL the local candidates in your electorate (and any other political candidate you have contact with) this simple question.
“What are YOU doing to stop the Traveston Crossing Dam?”
2: Record their response to you (or refusal to respond) accurately. Better still, get them to give it to you in writing.
3: Post their response in a reply to this forum topic, making sure you clearly name the candidate, their party and the name of the electorate.
The LNP and Greens have already put out firm party-wide committments to put an end to the whole fiasco. Lets make sure they hold to their committment, and every candidate is aware of them.
Even Labor candidates can take an active role within the Labor party (and it’s support network of big-business infrastructure, media and banking mates) to stop this farce NOW. Let’s hear candidates clearly state how they will be active within the ‘democracy’ of the Labor party to fix up the mess that has been created. It is a sad situation if the only way that Labor party supporters and candidates can retain their personal integrity in the presence of a corrupt minority is to leave the party.
There is no need for any more scientific, economic or social analyses.
Nearly 3 years of studies and inquiries have made it is very obvious that this proposal is a dud on all fronts. The Senate has called upon the State Government to abandon the project. The only questions are how soon, and what will be done to repair the damage done to the families and communities of the Mary Valley.

MARY RIVER ACTION GROUPS UNITE TO PLAN STRATEGY
Brisbane, Mary Valley and Hervey Bay groups fighting the proposed damming of the Mary River at Traveston Crossing joined together over the weekend to agree campaign strategies ahead of the forthcoming State election.
More than 50 members of three opposition groups, the Greater Mary Association, Save the Mary River Coordinating Group, and Brisbane Save the Mary River Group, met to develop a program for joint community actions.
As a collective, the groups confirmed that although they are not party political, they will actively campaign to oppose any candidates who are in favour of the proposed damming of the Mary River.
‘We’ll be asking all candidates standing for election to state their views and position on the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam, and advising voters of the outcome,’ said Vikki Uhlmann, whose Brisbane team is ensuring that Brisbane MPs and candidates will have the facts about why the dam proposal should be scrapped and the benefits of several alternative water supply options for SEQ.
‘The Labor State Government’s position is full steam ahead on approvals to dam the Mary River at Traveston Crossing, with Premier Anna Bligh stating
“They will know in early 2009 the decision of the state Coordinator-General, and I expect that within two to three months of that they will know the decision of the federal government”. We came together to ensure that our three organizations work together as a united force and coordinate our efforts to ensure that the dam proposal is overturned” said Glenda Pickersgill President of the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group.
Darryl Stewart, President of the Greater Mary Association told the meeting that many people in the lower end regions of the river from Maryborough to Hervey Bay are outraged at the lack of government understanding of the impact of the dam if it were ever built and are determined to do what it takes to have the proposal defeated.
Marathon kayaker Steve Posselt who has paddled thousands of kilometers to support the campaign summarized the organizations this way: “we are not just campaigners, we are strong family, that has and will continue to make sure that the electors of Queensland are informed of the absolute stupidity of this proposal” END
