The reasons behind this decision could be interpreted in several ways.

Could it have been the findings of the independent reports commissioned by Environment Minister Peter Garrett? Could it have been the many thousands of letters of opposition to the dam proposal that pass across parliamentary desks? Or could it be that the government has recognised the dam as an environmental albatross around its neck in the lead-up to a state election? Or perhaps it’s all three?
No longer is this a local issue; environment groups across the country have thrown their weight behind the campaign. There has never been a more crucial time to add your voice to the opposition to Traveston Dam.

The initiative, called ‘From my family… to yours’ encourages people who live near the Mary River (from Maleny to Hervey Bay) to send a copy of the beautiful new book ‘Love, Mary’ to a randomly selected Brisbane family, along with a letter of explanation.

Although the dam proposal has now been ‘delayed’, this book will continue the momentum of the campaign to save the Mary River, aiming to stop the proposed dam completely.

The book will be a cost-effective, eye-catching, heart-touching booklet which will be a vibrant, insistent “call to arms”, asking Australia to rise up and join us in our campaign to stop the proposed mega-dam on the Mary River.

It will aim to reach people around the country who have time and energy to support the campaign, but who are not necessarily frequent users of the internet.
