Paradise Dam

Lungfish court case gearing up
A SETBACK in the legal battle over a fishway on Paradise Dam has not dampened hopes that the ruling will set a precedent to protect lungfish. The Wide Bay Burnett Conservation Committee (WBBCC) has gone all the way to the Supreme Court in an attempt to prove that Paradise Dam has contravened its planning permission by having a fish lift they claim does not work. But Supreme Court Judge Justice Logan dismissed as “irrelevant” much of the evidence gathered by WBBBCC, including their claim that defendents Burnett Water knew that the lift was not working properly.

Beattie holds key to Paradise Dam
Self-professed ‘media-tart’ Premier Beattie dusted down and then donned his trusty Akubra before heading to the cane fields of Bundaberg at an early stage of his subsequent election triumph. The intention was clear - to shore up jobs in the district with talk of new dams, enlarged ports and fresh job opportunities. This latter point remains an especially sensitive issue for Mr Beattie because he has failed to shake the odium surrounding his stated objective of reigning-in the State’s unemployment levels to five percent. All-up, and as a result of the proposed infrastructure changes, some 900 jobs may be created - certainly during the construction phase. At the time, almost a year ago to the day, the talk was of guaranteeing farmers an annual yield of 130,000ML of water. More than anything the district’s cropping industries are looking for certainty.
Paradise Dam to undergo green audit
The Federal Government will carry out an environmental audit of Paradise Dam, west of Bundaberg in south-east Queensland, next month. A Department of Environment and Water spokeswoman says the audit is designed to ensure the project has been implemented as the Commonwealth proposed. Kevin Ingersole from the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group says the State Government has failed to comply with the conditions and he fears the same could happen with the proposed Traveston Crossing dam near Gympie.
Dam now irrigator's paradise
DESPERATE farmers are rushing to buy irrigation water from the Paradise Dam that they previously deemed too expensive, as the drought continues to take a toll on crops. However, the dam faces new criticism from environmentalists that it is an economic dud. The $200 million dam, built near Bundaberg two years ago, was valued at $76 million in SunWater’s 2005-06 annual report.
